These rocked visually, but they were pretty uncomfortable. You get used to them after a couple hours. I was able to wear them at a costume party for around 4 hours. Any longer would've been pretty unbearable. I was using drops the whole night, but they only provided minimal relief. I don't know if they're naturally uncomfy, if I did something wrong, or if I just happen to have drier eyes than the average Joe. But anyway, they totally sold my costume and that's what matters most.

What Are Black Sclera Contacts?

Black sclera contacts are specialty lenses that cover a larger portion of the eye than standard contact lenses. Unlike regular colored contacts, these lenses extend beyond the iris to partially or fully cover the sclera (the white part of your eye), creating a bold, all-black appearance.

You can choose from:

Full vs Mini Sclera Contacts: Which Should You Choose?

Choosing between full black sclera contacts and black mini sclera contacts depends on the look you want to achieve and your comfort level with wearing larger lenses.

Both styles create a striking effect, but they differ in size, coverage, and ease of use. If you’re going for maximum impact, full sclera lenses deliver a dramatic transformation. If you prefer something more wearable and beginner-friendly, mini sclera lenses are a great starting point.

Full Black Sclera Contacts

Full black sclera contacts typically measure around 20mm–22mm in diameter, covering not just the iris but the entire visible sclera (the white part of the eye). This creates a bold, all-black effect that instantly transforms your appearance.

These lenses are best suited for:

  • Horror or special effects cosplay.
  • Film, photography, or stage performances.
  • Intense, high-impact character transformations.

Because of their larger size, full sclera lenses can be more challenging to insert and may require some experience to wear comfortably. However, the visual payoff is unmatched for dramatic looks.

Black Mini Sclera Contacts

Black mini sclera contacts are slightly smaller, usually around 17mm–18mm in diameter, offering a similar dark, enlarged-eye effect without fully covering the sclera. They strike a balance between visual impact and comfort.

These lenses are ideal for:

  • First-time sclera lens wearers.
  • Cosplay or fashion looks that don’t require full coverage.
  • Longer wear sessions with improved comfort.

Mini sclera lenses are generally easier to handle, insert, and remove, making them a popular choice if you’re new to larger contact lenses or want a more practical option for extended use.

How Long Can You Wear Black Sclera Contacts?

Sclera lenses are larger than regular contacts, so wear time is more limited.

  • Recommended: up to 4–6 hours per day.
  • Always follow lens-specific guidelines.
  • Remove immediately if you feel discomfort.

Proper care and limited wear time help keep your eyes safe and comfortable.

How to Put In Black Sclera Contacts Safely

Inserting black sclera contacts can feel intimidating at first due to their larger size, but with the right technique and a bit of practice, it becomes much easier. Taking your time and following proper hygiene is essential to ensure both comfort and eye safety. Whether you’re using full sclera or mini sclera contacts, a careful approach will help you achieve a smooth, irritation-free fit.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly
Always start with clean hands to prevent bacteria or debris from getting into your eyes.
  2. Place the lens on your fingertip
Make sure the lens is clean, undamaged, and properly oriented (not inside out).
  3. Hold your eyelids open wide
Use one hand to hold your upper eyelid and the other to pull down your lower eyelid. This creates enough space for the larger lens.
  4. Gently place the lens onto your eye
Slowly bring the lens toward your eye and place it directly onto the surface. Try to stay calm and keep your eye steady.
  5. Blink slowly to adjust
Once the lens is in place, blink gently a few times to help it settle comfortably on your eye.

Because of their size, sclera lenses may take a few attempts to insert correctly, especially if you’re new to them. Stay patient, avoid rushing, and consider practicing with mini sclera contacts first if you’re a beginner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Black sclera contacts are designed to create a dramatic, full-eye blacked-out effect. They are commonly used for cosplay, Halloween costumes, film production, stage performances, and bold fashion looks.

These lenses instantly transform your appearance, making them a popular choice for horror, fantasy, and character-based styling.

Yes, black sclera contacts are safe when purchased from a trusted retailer and used correctly. Always follow proper hygiene practices, clean your lenses with approved solution, and avoid wearing them longer than recommended. If you have sensitive eyes or are unsure, consult an eye care professional before use.

Beginners can wear sclera contacts, but it’s recommended to start with black mini sclera contacts. These are smaller, easier to insert, and generally more comfortable than full sclera lenses. Once you’re more confident, you can try full sclera lenses for a more dramatic effect.

Because of their larger size, black sclera contacts may slightly reduce peripheral vision. However, many styles are available in prescription options, allowing you to maintain clear central vision while achieving the desired look.

Choosing the right size depends on your comfort level and desired effect:

  • 14–15mm: Standard colored contacts (natural enlargement)
  • 17–18mm: Black mini sclera contacts (balanced look + comfort)
  • 20–22mm: Full black sclera contacts (maximum coverage and impact)

Our Princess Pinky Mid Black Sclera is the perfect choice for those who find the 17mm mini sclera too small and the 22mm too large. Its 20mm diameter makes them easier to insert than the 22mm while still delivering the same bold and dramatic effect.

Black sclera contacts should typically be worn for no more than 4 to 6 hours at a time, depending on the lens type and your comfort level. Because they cover a larger portion of the eye, it’s important to give your eyes regular breaks and avoid extended wear.

Black sclera contacts are generally more expensive than regular colored lenses due to their larger size and specialized design.

However, they offer a unique full-eye transformation that standard lenses cannot achieve. Many options are reusable, making them a worthwhile investment for cosplay and events.

To keep your lenses safe and comfortable:

  • Clean and store them in fresh contact lens solution
  • Never use water to rinse or store lenses
  • Replace lenses according to their usage cycle
  • Always wash your hands before handling

Proper care helps extend the life of your lenses and protects your eyes.

Yes, our black sclera contacts are available with prescription, so you can enjoy both clear vision and a bold transformation. Always ensure you select the correct prescription and consult an eye care professional if needed.
